Intermittent self-catheterisation – Nurse feedback
“If there are no available appointments for a long time it is very beneficial for
them to be seen at home which avoids them waiting for longer than they should.”
Gillian Galloway, Urology Nurse Practitioner, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Hospital, Scotland
“It’s a fantastic service, allowing patients to be seen quickly in the comfort of their own home by a
nurse specialist. It reduces the demand on our service and frees up clinics for urgent referrals.”
Lisa Cochrane, Urology Nurse Specialist, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Hospital, Scotland
“The main benefit that this service brings to our patients it allows patients to be seen within a realistic timeframe. This may otherwise not be possible due to other demands on our services. The service provides the flexibility for patients that could otherwise be challenging.”
Trish McKenna, Lead Nurse, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Hospital, Scotlands
“There are many patients with bladder dysfunction who are housebound or elderly. People also
feel more comfortable in their own environment for things like learning ISC.”
Gillian Galloway, Urology Nurse Practitioner, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Hospital, Scotland
“Patients will be more relaxed; they can practise ISC in their own bathroom where they would normally
be performing the task; they don’t need to travel; more time can be spent with the patient; they are
shown a wide variety of catheters, and expert advice and guidance is given.”
Lisa Cochrane, Urology Nurse Specialist, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Hospital, Scotland
“The benefits of seeing patients in their home where this is required are significant. It is difficult to list these as circumstances vary for each patient. Visiting at home allows the BD nursing staff to assess the patient in their own environment and also see the patients when they are probably more relaxed in their own home. For some patients it would not be at all possible to visit hospital so this is a fantastic service which allows us to ensure our patients are followed up by expert nursing staff [this is a comment from my personal experience of working with Lesley Douglas who is very knowledgeable, professional and has excellent interpersonal skills].”
Trish McKenna, Lead Nurse, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Hospital, Scotland
“I don’t believe that this is an issue. They try the product prior to orders being arranged
and if there are issues it is easy to switch products.”
Gillian Galloway, Urology Nurse Practitioner, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Hospital, Scotland
“I believe patients are shown a wide variety of catheters from different
companies and can choose which catheter suits them best.”
Lisa Cochrane, Urology Nurse Specialist, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Hospital, Scotland
“Working with Lesley and with her leads in BD, through our discussions, I am certain that the patient comfort and choice is the most important part of the appointment. Lesley is very clear that she works within the Nursing Code [NMC]. Now that she is training the new BD nurse Mairi to work with her I am reassured that this will also be the case with Mairi.”
Trish McKenna, Lead Nurse, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Hospital, Scotland
“The nurse who visits them at home will write to me or my colleagues.”
Gillian Galloway, Urology Nurse Practitioner, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Hospital, Scotland
“Patients are normally followed up by telephone once they have been taught ISC
and I receive a detailed letter outlining the patient consultation and progress.
I arrange the necessary follow-up from there.”
Lisa Cochrane, Urology Nurse Specialist, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Hospital, Scotland
“The follow-up is whatever is required. The BD nurses will see patient for
follow-up for ToV, ISC, ISD and Lesley also sees the patients who have been
treated with Botox.”
Trish McKenna, Lead Nurse, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Hospital, Scotland
“I like having the option to refer patients to this service and patients do feedback
that it is preferable to be seen at home.”
Gillian Galloway, Urology Nurse Practitioner, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Hospital, Scotland
“This is an invaluable service and anecdotally patients have reported very good
satisfaction with the service.”
Lisa Cochrane, Urology Nurse Specialist, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Hospital, Scotland
“Our service in North Sector and now Clyde Sector NHSGGC have been greatly enhanced by the work that the BD nurses do by working in partnership with us. As Lead Nurse, I have regular meetings/discussions with Lesley and this will often be used as a forum to discuss ideas/improvements that we can take forward. “
